The gateway city to Machu Picchu, "the lost city of the Incas," Cusco sits at 10,800 feet above sea level and is the historical capital of the Inca Empire. Remains of the original Incan city are still visible in Cusco at the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Virgins of the Sun. More recent landmarks (circa 1570) are represented by this Jesuit church, one of two once-competing cathedrals on the main square of Plaza de Armas.
